Disney to Refurbish Big Thunder Mountain Railroad this September

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Disney WorldBoth Disneyland and Disneyworld have decided it’s time for ever-popular Big Thunder Mountain Railroad to receive a bit of a spruce up.

Disneyland was the first to announce they will be closing the Frontierland favorite with guests unable to ride as of September 7th. It is not known what exactly will be refurbished on the ride, and only a vague “fall” reopening date has been provided for guests to be able to once more descend into the good ole’ abandoned mine shaft before buckling up to “swoop around turns, drop into canyons and dart through the mysterious ghost town of Tumbleweed”.

It seems now Disneyland’s younger sister will also see Big Thunder Mountain Railroad get some work done.

Even less is known about Magic Kingdom’s work on the railroad, only that a permit has been filed in order for Disney World to do the work. Coincidentally, Walt Disney World’s Big Thunder will also see the work start on September 7th.

What is unclear is if the ride will close for the glow-up or if work will be done around the attraction/outside of hours.

It’s no huge surprise that Disney World would want to make one of its main attractions absolutely ship-shape in time for the ‘World’s most magical celebration’- its 50th anniversary which begins on October 1.
