Join us for a day of sailing the beautiful Mediterranean Sea on the northern coast of Crete, Greece. We start our boat trip at Elounda and pass Plaka before taking a look at Spinalonga, a former leper colony. We also visit a hidden beach spot named Skistra near Kalydon Island. We then head to the Sunken City of Olous but are unable to snorkel because of high winds. Finally, we enjoy lunch on our private boat near Kolokytha beach. We feast on homemade Greek Food - Dakos, baked potatoes and stuffed chicken.

Synopsis:

Lucky Prescott (Isabela Merced, Dora and the Lost City of Gold) never really knew her late mother, Milagro Navarro (Eiza González, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw), a fearless horse-riding stunt performer from Miradero, a small town on the edge of the wide-open frontier.
Like her mother, Lucky isn’t exactly a fan of rules and restrictions, which has caused her Aunt Cora (Academy Award® winner Julianne Moore) no small amount of worry. Lucky has grown up in an East Coast city under Cora’s watchful eye, but when Lucky presses her own luck with one too many risky escapades, Cora picks up stakes and moves them both back with Lucky’s father, Jim (Oscar® nominee Jake Gyllenhaal), in Miradero.
Lucky is decidedly unimpressed with the sleepy little town. She has a change of heart when she meets Spirit, a wild Mustang who shares her independent streak, and befriends two local horseback riders, Abigail Stone (Mckenna Grace, Captain Marvel) and Pru Granger (Marsai Martin, Little). Pru’s father, stable owner Al Granger (Emmy winner Andre Braugher, Fox’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine), is the best friend of Lucky’s father.
When a heartless horse wrangler (Emmy nominee Walton Goggins, FX’s Justified) and his team plan to capture Spirit and his herd and auction them off to a life of captivity and hard labor, Lucky enlists her new friends and bravely embarks on the adventure of a lifetime to rescue the horse who has given her freedom and a sense of purpose, and has helped Lucky discover a connection to her mother’s legacy and to her Mexican heritage that she never expected.

We had a blast learning how to make traditional Cretan products while visiting the Cretan Olive Oil in Crete. Located just outside of Agios Nikolas, this farm offers guided experiences of the farm's oil production, pottery classes, cooking classes, cheese making, and more. The farm is truly a fun place for all members of the family.
First, we partook in the Cretan cheese-making experience. We learned about the different cheeses produced in Crete and then made two of our own with the help of an expert shepherd. We learned how to milk a goat, which is not as easy as it looks. Then the shepherd puts the milk in a hot pot over a fire to make Myzithra. We then learn about the traditional olive oil production process, which was done without modern machinery in Crete.

We Make Traditional Cretan Olive Oil & Cheese in Agios Nikolaos Crete | Greek Food

Agios Nikolaos is the capital of the region of Lasithi, East Crete. It’s a beautiful seaside town, popular among tourists all year long for its beaches and the mild climate all year long. There's also countless things to discover near Agios Nikolaos. In this Greek travel vlog, we take you on a tour of the best things to do in and around Agios Nikolas. Here are the places featured in this travel vlog:
Elounda: Situated on the stunningly beautiful Gulf of Mirabello, on the North-Eastern coast of Crete, Elounda has grown from a pretty little fishing village to a bustling small town. This majestic village is located just 15 minutes away from Agios Nikolas and is a popular vacation spot in its own right. There’s plenty to do here with its beach, little shops and taverna’s that overlook the bay. You must try one of the many tavernas that dot the port. We ate at Lotus Eaters Mediterranean Restaurant. We ordered grilled octopus that was charred perfectly followed by lamb in a spicy red stew.
Spinalonga: Not too far from Elounda is Spinalonga, another must visit place while staying in Agios Nikolas. Small boats leave daily from Elounda port and Plaka to this small island. The island served as a military stronghold during Venetian (and later Ottoman) rule and a medieval citadel stands testament to that chapter in the island’s history. In 1904, after the Cretans evicted the Turks from Spinalonga, the islet was transformed into a leper colony, where, by 1913, after Crete became part of Greece, anyone afflicted with the disease was sent. At its peak, the colony comprised nearly 400 inhabitants.It’s hard to imagine that the last leper left in 1957.
Private Boat Cruise: There’s something to be said about just sitting back and letting all the cares of the world fade away as you cruise under the Mediterranean sun. It can be costly, but in our opinion, worth the price. The captain of the boat can plan your day at one of the many snorkeling areas in the region, or you can request to visit areas that interest you. We booked with boattripelounda.gr and we though they provided a great tour of the area at an economical price.
Cretan Olive Oil Farm: Located just outside of Agios Nikolas this farm gives guests the opportunity to learn about local Cretan products. They offer guided experiences of the farms oil production, pottery classes, cooking classes, cheese making and more. The farm is a fun place for all members of the family.
Alymiras Beach; Alymiras or Almiros beach is located 2.5km south of Agios Nikolaos and is the most popular beach of the city. It is shaped near the exit of Almiros River, which empties on the south part of the beach. Next to the beach, the protected wetland of Almiros hosts several rare birds, towering eucalyptus trees, reed and some palm trees. The beach is quite long and very well-organized. It is sandy and the water is shallow and usually calm, making it ideal especially for young children.
Gioma: Not only does this restaurant have one of the best views in the city, overlooking the lake, the Greek food is equally as good. We’ve ate here a couple of times and enjoyed all dishes on the menu. Be sure to try the fish, croquettes, octopus, and gyros.
Krista: This picturesque town is nice to stroll through and we enjoyed lunch at a local taverna right on the main road. We had the Greek salad, stuffed zucchini flowers and pita souvlakis, which were all delicious. After lunch, take the time to browse the small shops of the town.
The Ancient City of Lato: Before heading back Agios Nikolas, take a short drive to the ruins of the ancient city of Lato.

Explore this Greek Islands beach that the hippies discovered in the 1960s-70s with us!
In this vlog from Crete, we show you the perfect way to spend your day at Matala Beach. This limestone beach has to be one of our favorite beaches in Crete because of its uniqueness. Not only is it rich in history, but the limestone beach is unlike any other. The day we went to the beach, the water was extremely choppy and wavy, but we have been when the beach is calm. Instead of walking on sand, you walk on limestone as you wade near the shore, which is a different feeling. If you're adventurous, there's plenty of areas to jump into the sea from the overlooking rocks.
No trip to Matala is complete without touring its famous caves. Matala Beach is best known for its hippie past. During the late '60s and earlier '70s, the hippies discovered the area and lived in the Caves for months. The most famous of the visitors is probably Canadian singer Joni Mitchell, who wrote her iconic song Carey while living in one of the caves.
Finally, the little town of Matala retains its hippie flair and is filled with murals, handmade good, and hippie murals. One of our favorite restaurants is called Scala. They make a sea bream, calamari, and other delicious Greek food.

A Tour of Matala Crete's Hippie Beach: This is a Greek Island Paradise

In this Greece travel vlog, we take you to some of Crete's most important Minoan archaeology sites. We visit Phaistos Palace, the second most important archaeological site in Crete, after the world-famous Knossos in Heraklion. It was inhabited from the Neolithic period until the foundation and development of the Minoan palaces in the 15th century B.C. The world-famous Phaistos Disc that is now on display at the archaeological museum of Heraklion was found here. A short drive away is the Archaeological Site of Agia Triada, the summer palace of the Phaistos royals. The famous Hagia Triada sarcophagus & the "Harvesters vase" were both found here during excavations. These archeological sites are close to Matala and are great day trips when you're not by the beach.
Lastly, we eat at the close by Taverna Agios Ioannis (Greek Food). We ate traditional Cretan Dakos, Greek hamburger, souvlaki and fried courgette. The rabbit was also very good.

Life is about to change around here!
Yesterday, Ella and Rose received their first message from their future Kindergarten teacher! It’s hard to imagine they will be in elementary in just a few short months. As a mom, I think this milestone is the hardest. You’re excited but at the same time sad because it is the start of them being less dependent upon you. It’s a truly bittersweet moment.

Our summer adventure is just around the corner! This year, we have decided to stay a little closer to home (at least what we consider to be closer 😆). We will be heading to Florida and Turks and Caicos for the summer.
Florida has turned into a place where we see us potentially relocating one day. It is definitely something we have to be serious about because it's incredibly challenging to do so as non-citizens. So, We're taking our extended time in the state to get to know it better.
Of course, one spot on our travel list is Walt Disney World. We just can't head to Florida and not visit. I last visited in February and was impressed with how seriously Walt Disney World is taking health protocols.
Finally, we will be spending the last part of the summer in Turks and Caicos. In my opinion, it is the most beautiful of all the Caribbean islands. The last time we were there, I had just found out I was pregnant with Ella and Rose, so I'm looking forward to no morning sickness and enjoying some tropical drinks this time around. 😋

Have you watched our latest vlog yet?
We found the most magical beach in all of the Greek Islands! Preveli Beach in the south of Crete is probably the most unique beach we have visited in all our travels. Preveli Beach has a freshwater river that meets the Mediterranean Sea. Along the lagoon, there is a large forest (Palm Forest) of the rare Cretan date palm Phoenix theophrasti. This gives the area an almost tropical look and has contributed to making the beach famous and popular despite its remoteness.
We took a boat from Plakias to Preveli Beach, but you can also park above the beach and walk down the steep cliff for about 45 minutes. We definitely recommend taking the boat if you have children.

Missing the Greek sun and our time spent discovering little Cretan towns last summer.

Things are still up in air when it come to international travel for many, but if things improve I would definitely recommend putting Crete on your bucket list. I can’t think of a better place for families to visit after the pandemic. The locals are incredibly welcoming and the island has something for everyone - picturesque towns, beaches, history and amazing food. Also, Crete is much more affordable and just as beautiful as other popular Greek islands.

We could spend whole summers driving around the countryside of Crete.
In our latest vlog, we take you on an exploration around Rethymno. Our first stop is the Monastery of Arkadi. There's genuinely something majestic about how the sun shines on the monastery walls and the 16th-century church. Almost every spot is picturesque, and photography lovers or Instagram enthusiasts will not have difficulty finding the perfect shot here. Our second stop is Margarites' village, a small village known for its pottery. We had fun browsing the pottery shops and even seeing one of the artisans at work before catching a traditional Greek lunch overlooking the beautiful Cretan.

Hello! We’re The Go To Family.
It's been awhile since we shared our story, so we want to re-introduce ourselves to everyone today.
We’re a family of five who explore the world together. Three years ago, Daniel said he wanted to start documenting our travels not only as a digital memory for us but to share with the world. We went out and bought a camera with no clue how YouTube worked at the time 😆 and set out on our first adventure as a family of five. Toting 15-month-old twins and a 5-year-old across Europe was challenging (to say the least), but amazing at the same time. We discovered we could live a non-traditional life with our kids. A life where we can be one while learning through shared experiences and making memories.
We have sailed through the Andaman sea in Thailand, climbed Machu Picchu and ate street foods in the markets of Vietnam and more. The pandemic has not changed our path but made the road a little more squiggly. 🤪 We continue to travel and are more hopeful than ever that things are going to be alright.
Our next adventure is currently being planned, but keeping it a secret for now. 🤫

We have a new vlog up on The Go To Family YouTube Channel!
In this vlog, we take you on a beautiful day trip to Agia Triada Monastery and Manousakis Winery. The Monastery's lush grounds and Byzantine architecture are not to be missed. It's also a perfect spot to take beautiful shots of your holiday to share with friends and family. From there, we take a drive to Manousakis Winery, our favorite winery in the Chania area. Not only do they produce amazing wine, but their winery is kid-friendly. Parents are more than welcome to come do wine-tasting. The Greek food they serve up is traditionally Cretan, and we enjoyed each dish too.

The ruins are our playground. 🇬🇷
One reason we love Crete so much is that there is so many archeological sites. Visiting with small children may seem at odds but it truly isn’t. The girls love that they can run and discover hidden corners of the remains. There’s truly nothing like learning through experience, especially for kids that have difficulty in a traditional school environment. I always throw in some information about the people and the significance of the place we’re exploring. I hope it will inspire the girls to be curious about everything in life.

Ella taking in the beautiful view of Agios Nikolaos from our apartment last summer. It was our first time staying in this area of Crete and we fell in love with the it. There are so many beautiful beaches and restaurants to enjoy in the area.

Just being the best mom I can be. ❤️

Often times it is hard to be fully open up on social media out of fear or judgement but I want to be and I think it’s important. Mental Health issues is something many people are dealing with at the moment because of the uncertainty Covid has brought upon our lives. I have been struggling with extreme anxiety. For me, it didn’t feel right to share our photos of happiness when I was feeling the exact opposite. I was struggling with the thoughts of losing ‘our’ path coupled with feelings of isolation with the lockdowns in our province.
Travel has always been therapeutic to me so I’ve had to find new ways to deal with my anxiety. In the last weeks, I have been trying to be the best mom I can by taking care of myself. One way was to get healthy and as of today I have lost 11 pounds. I have been trying to focus on the positives of life and finding joy in the things I love. I just started a photography class and I hope to improve my skills by this summer. Also, our vlog is very much active, so be sure to continually check it out for new content. My goal is to start getting two vlogs out a week.
