If you are looking to catch a concert in San Francisco but are yet to get vaccinated against Covid-19, you might want to reconsider your plans. That’s because San Fran has become the first city in the United States to require proof of vaccination at all indoor venues. Here’s what you need to know.
San Francisco Now Wants To See Proof Of Vaccination For Indoor Venues
San Francisco’s mayor London Breed announced that the city will require proof of vaccination at all indoor restaurants, bars, gyms, and entertainment venues in order to keep businesses open during this new surge of Covid-19 cases both in California and across the country.
“This is to protect kids, is to protect those who can’t get vaccinated, is to make sure that we don’t go backwards, is to make sure that I never have to get up in front of you and say, ‘I’m sorry, I know we just reopened and now the city is closed again because we are seeing too many people die,’ ” Breed said.
Further reports say that it will take effect Aug. 20, but businesses will have two more months to verify employees’ vaccination status “to preserve jobs while giving time for compliance.” Employees of these places must also be vaccinated by October 13. Children under age 12 are exempted, as are people getting pick-up orders.
The new rule was initially led by the San Francisco Bar Owners Association who first imposed it against the unvaccinated.
SF Bar Owner Alliance President Ben Bleiman puts it this way:
“These people were messing up our livelihoods. They were putting everybody else in danger and it was something that came up and we floated the idea: What if we don’t let them inside?”
Now whether or not more cities across the U.S. will follow suit remains to be seen.
