Do you smell that? It’s the smell of a fresh cup of Tim Horton’s coffee brewing, something that some Americans have longed for ever since the pandemic began during the first quarter of 2020. With more and more people getting vaccinated and cases dropping on both sides of the border, Canada and the U.S. are finally easing their border restrictions in the hopes that it can make travel easier for citizens of both countries. Here’s what you need to know.
Canada And The U.S. Are Finally Easing Border Restrictions
If you are from Toronto and looking to do a little shopping in the Big Apple this summer, there’s a good chance that it might happen. That’s because the Canadian government began lifting travel restrictions from countries including the United States. In fact, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that changes are coming at a news conference in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. He said fully vaccinated Canadian citizens and permanent residents are no longer required to quarantine for 14 days upon their return.
In addition, fully vaccinated air travelers also no longer have to spend their first three days in Canada at a government-approved hotel.
“We’re very hopeful that we’re going to see new steps on reopening announced in the coming weeks,” Trudeau said, adding, “We’re going to make sure that we’re not seeing a resurgence of COVID-19 cases because nobody wants to go back to further restrictions, after having done so much and sacrificed so much to get to this point.”
Trudeau added that he understands how much people want to travel without any restrictions but said that things aren’t “normal” just yet, despite the fact that many parts of the world have already eased travel restrictions, especially as case counts go down.
“Nobody wants us to move too fast and have to reimpose restrictions as case numbers rise like we’re seeing elsewhere in the world,″ he said. “We need to do this right.”
