For those preferring to travel alone, the Cayman Islands in the Caribbean are a great choice of destination. In fact, these beautiful islands are famous for their friendly locals and their delicious cuisine. Whether planning to spend time on the beach, snorkeling, scuba diving, or hiking, the Cayman Islands are an excellent choice for solo travelers. Here are five reasons why.
1. Hike the Mastic Trail on Grand Cayman
Spend some time away from the idyllic beaches of Grand Cayman by hiking the Mastic Trail. This 200-year-old trail is an ideal activity for nature lovers, as the gravel path meanders through a native mangrove swamp and into a two-million-year-old woodland area.
The 2.3-mile trail is an easy hike, preserved by the Cayman Islands National Trust. Hikers are recommended to wear suitable footwear, along with some bug repellant. However, besides the mosquitoes, the one major downside is that the trail is sheltered from the sea breezes. In fact, it can get very hot and humid during the day. For this reason, mornings are the best time for a hike along the Mastic Trail.
2. Lounge on Seven Mile Beach in the Cayman Islands
Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman is considered to be one of the best Caribbean beaches and it is easy to see why. This gorgeous, crescent-shaped beach is the ideal stretch of sand for relaxation. On top of this, many of Grand Cayman’s best beach resorts are located along this stretch of coastline. Meanwhile, casual beach restaurants and bars, restrooms and showers line the coast.
Snorkeling or scuba diving the crystal clear waters adds to its attraction, revealing beautiful coral and colorful fish. Read on for more details of water sports on or near Seven Mile Beach.
3. Eden Rock and Devil’s Grotto
A little south of Seven Mile Beach and around 46 feet below the surface, solo travelers can explore Eden Rock and Devil’s Grotto. These locations are among the most popular diving spots on Grand Cayman. Both sites offer fascinating underwater mazes, filled with parrotfish, barracuda, silversides and tarpon. Meanwhile, both are enjoyable dives for beginners and intermediate divers alike.
Head to Eden Rock Diving Center in South Church Street, George Town, to learn more about these great diving locations.
4. Dive to the Kittiwake Shipwreck
For a true adventure off Seven Mile Beach, dive to the USS Kittiwake, a former US Navy submarine. The craft served for more than 50 years before it was sunk in 2011, but is now a popular dive site. Scuba divers can have plenty of fun, diving around what is now almost an artificial reef, with its marine life, including turtles, shrimp, grouper fish, eels and barracuda.
As the water is so clear, even snorkelers can get a good view of the sunken sub. Book your dive through one of Grand Cayman’s dive operators for the best experience.
5. Visit Cayman Spirits Co. Distillery on Grand Cayman
Cayman Spirits Co. Distillery started out small in 2008, producing ocean-aged rum. Fast forward to now, and the distillery has grown. What makes this distillery unique is the fact they age their rum on the ocean floor, making them the first to do so. Nowadays, the distillery also offers flavored rums, liqueurs and vodka.
A tour of the facility comes highly recommended, but many suggest leaving by taxi, as there are so many spirits to try.
Have fun on your solo trip to the Cayman Islands. There is so much to see and do here, maybe return with friends.
