Even though many states have been open for business for quite some time now, Hawaii has been particularly cautious about reopening for travel and tourism. While the state of Hawaii has been looking to make travel easier for visitors this summer, the mayor of Maui has just asked the major airlines to stop sending so many people to the Hawaiian island. Here’s what you need to know.
Maui Mayor Doesn’t Want Guests Traveling To Hawaii This Summer
While travel is back in many parts of the world, Hawaii isn’t quite ready to roll out the red carpet just yet. According to Hawaii News Now, the mayor of Maui has asked airlines to send in fewer visitors. Mayor Michael Victorino is concerned that the number of tourists traveling to Maui is almost at pre-pandemic levels, and that’s why he wants to press the pause button before it’s too late by reducing the number of flights to the island.
“We’re asking for a pause, if you want to use that term, you know we don’t have the authority to say stop, asking the powers to be to help us in this sense,” said Maui County Mayor Victorino.
He added, “I know there’s been a report that the Department of Transportation that says we can take more passengers. But one of the things I really really don’t want to see is us unloading passengers into buses on the tarmac and driving them across then unloading them at the gates. That would be a very dangerous situation.”
Hawaii has had some of the nation’s most strict Covid-19 restrictions. It’s also the only state in the nation that hasn’t fully re-opened yet. The governor doesn’t plan on lifting all restrictions until 70 percent of the state’s population is vaccinated. Right now, that number is only at 58 percent.
Previous reports have said that the state is also looking to drop Covid-19 testing for tourists. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said last week that most people who are fully vaccinated don’t need to be tested for COVID-19, but Hawaii still wants visitors tested before visiting the state.
