There’s a chance that you might once again enjoy a hot cup of Tim Horton’s with a coffee crisp this summer. That’s because there’s a new report that says the U.S. is looking to re-open its border with Canada sooner rather than later. In fact, there’s a target date of June 22nd, which might make things a little easier on travelers before the peak summer season. Here’s what you need to know.
The U.S. Is Looking To Re-Open Its Border With Canada Before The Summer Travel Season
As many travelers know by now, Canada has been very restrictive with non-essential travel ever since their borders closed back in March of 2020. But with more and more people getting vaccinated, travelers are hoping that both President Joe Biden’s administration and that of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will reopen the U.S.-Canada border after 14 long months.
It’s been noted that while Canadians are allowed to travel to the United States by air, Americans aren’t allowed to cross the border for nonessential travel into Canada. Canadian citizens coming to the U.S. only needs to have had a negative coronavirus test no more than three days before travel. Trudeau told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation that he would prefer to wait until 75 percent of his country is vaccinated before fully reopening the border.
While Americans are not allowed to visit their neighbors to the north, they can travel to see their neighbors to the south, Mexico, and travel to the European Union this summer. But, the EU will only accept visitors who’ve received COVID-19 vaccines that have been approved by the European Medicines Agency. That would include the three vaccines that have been authorized for use in the United States — Moderna, Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer/BioNTech.
