Hawaii To Drop Outdoor Mask Mandate

Covid-19 Travel: Hawaii To Drop Outdoor Mask Mandate

The state of Hawaii wants to make things just a little bit easier on your next trip to the Big Island. Even though the CDC said a few weeks ago that anyone who is vaccinated no longer needs to wear a mask both indoors and outdoors.

In a step towards normalcy (or at least pre-Covid times) Hawaii Gov. David Ige said that his administration will no longer require face masks to be worn outside. Here’s what you need to know.

As many travelers know by now, Hawaii has been super strict about Covid-19 protocols and the health and safety of its citizens so much so that even vaccinated tourists must present a negative Covid-19 test before entering the state. But seeing how Hawaii is in much need of an economic boost towards its tourism sector, the state is trying to make things a little bit easier on everyone.

Thankfully, the state of Hawaii is now half vaccinated but the new mask rules apply to everyone, regardless of vaccination status. “Getting vaccinated is the best way to get to normal … so that we can relax the restrictions,” Ige said.

Although masks are no longer necessary outside, Ige urged people to remain cautious around others and consider wearing masks in crowds. It’s been noted that Ige did not announce any changes to outdoor gatherings, which are still limited to 10 people on Oahu and 25 in Hawaii County.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said last week that most people who are fully vaccinated don’t need to be tested for COVID-19, but Hawaii is still requiring everyone to be tested before visiting the state.

What’s more, Gov. Ige also announced that ocean sports such as surfing, canoeing and swimming events will be allowed to resume beginning June 1.

Tell us, how you do feel about this? Are you planning any trips this summer? If so, will you be staying close to home, going on a cruise, or traveling internationally for the first time in a year?
