For those looking to spend their off-season vacation in sunny Mexico during the upcoming Fall months, we’ve got some news for you. There are new reports that say the Mexican tourism ministers are looking to add COVID-19 related requirements for anyone who is visiting the country for non-essential travel. Mexico has been one of few countries that has been very liberal and lenient about allowing American travelers into the country, despite the ongoing pandemic that has been COVID-19. Here’s What You Need To Know Before Your Next Trip To Mexico
Mexico News Daily reports that tourism ministers is looking to get federal officials to require incoming international travelers – both from the United States and other countries – to present a COVID-19 vaccination certificate or a negative PCR test result before entering the country. Up until now, neither one has been required, allowing travelers to visit without the need to quarantine.
Tourism Ministers Association head Juan Carlos Rivera Castellanos said that the lack of protocols in Mexico is to blame for the influx of COVID-19 cases – as the widely contagious Delta variant – in many travel hot spots in the country, like Cancun.
The U.S. Department of State’s travel site suggests that travelers should reconsider their travel plans to Mexico. In fact, the CDC has issued a Level 3 Travel Health Notice for Mexico due to COVID-19, indicating a high level of COVID-19 in the country. What’s more the CDC also says that unvaccinated travelers should avoid nonessential travel to Mexico and because of the current situation in Mexico, all travelers may be at risk for getting and spreading COVID-19 variants.
Back in June, the U.S. extended its Covid-19 restrictions on non-essential travel at land and ferry crossings with both their neighbors to the north and south.
The White House said in a statement, “DHS also notes positive developments in recent weeks and is participating with other US agencies in the White House’s expert working groups with Canada and Mexico to identify the conditions under which restrictions may be eased safely and sustainably.”
